DAVID BOWIE'S ALADDIN SANE COVER GOES UP FOR AUCTION
With a blue and red lightning bolt across his face, eyes closed, and red hair—this is how photographer Brian Duffy immortalised the singer David Bowie for the cover of his sixth album, Aladdin Sane, from 1973. It will be put up for auction and could become the most expensive piece of album artwork ever sold in its genre. Substantial sums were spent when the cover was created, following the worldwide success of the artist’s previous 1972 album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
'The image of Bowie shot by my father is often referred to as the Mona Lisa of Pop,' stated Chris Duffy, Brian's son and Founder and Managing Director of the Duffy Archive.
An exhibition on Brian Duffy’s work, titled 'The Mona Lisa of Pop: The Duffy Archive,' will display the famous image, along with 34 other items from his archive. The exhibition opens on October 22 at the Bonhams auction house in London, UK, and will lead to the sale of the items, including the iconic Aladdin Sane artwork.
The original artwork is estimated to fetch between £250,000 and £300,000. Ringo Starr’s numbered copy, serial no. 0000001, of The Beatles’ The White Album, which sold for a record $790,000 (€729,000) in 2015, remains the most expensive album ever sold
