Three sand-filled toys have been pulled from shop shelves due to suspected asbestos contamination. The OPSS (Office for Product Safety and Standards) has issued instructions on how to dispose of the toys. It states that if the toy is intact, owners should "place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag, tape it securely, label it clearly, and store it in a safe place out of the reach of children." All three toysโ€”the HGL Stretchy Sand Monster Truck, Scrunchems Stretchies Sleepy Dino Toy, and HGL Stretchy Sand Pigโ€”are manufactured in China and distributed by One For Fun Limited. The CEO of One For Fun, David Mordecai, stated: โ€œWe are aware of recent global reports regarding the presence of trace amounts of asbestos in the sand used inside certain consumer products. โ€œThis has affected many toy companies worldwide. As a precautionary measure, we immediately conducted independent testing across our full range of sand-filled items. โ€œWhile current safety standards (EN71) do not require testing for asbestos, our investigations identified that three of our products contained trace contamination. These products have been withdrawn from the market. โ€œWe take product safety extremely seriously. Consequently, we have discontinued the use of sand as a filler in all current and future products. We remain committed to the highest safety standards and will continue to monitor and review our materials and processes accordingly.
