DOVER: MAJOR SEIZURES OF MEAT.
Almost 34 tonnes of meat illegally imported into England have been seized at the Port of Dover this month. The quantity of illegally entered meat and animal products has increased exponentially: from 13 tonnes between January and April 2023 to 70 tonnes for the same period in 2025. Alastair Carmichael MP, chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Committee, stated that the consequences of failing to address the issue "could be dire" following recent outbreaks of African Swine Fever. Hugh Richards, from the livestock board, says that "improving the facilities at Dover and making it fit for purpose" should be the top priority.
