MTV CLOSES DOWN IN THE UK

MTV closes down in the UK

The historic MTV is closing down, with the channel ceasing operations in the United Kingdom after nearly 40 years of service. According to reports from the BBC in the last few hours, starting from December 31, 2025, MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live will no longer be available.

Only MTV HD will survive, continuing to broadcast entertainment and reality shows like Naked Dating UK and Geordie Shore. It marks the end of a television era, giving way to new ways of listening to music.

The TV channel originated in the United States in 1981 as a revolutionary way to experience and listen to music. The European version arrived in 1987, and the UK channel launched in 1997, opening with the music video for 'Three Lions' by David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.

Former VJ Simone Angel expressed her sadness, commenting: 'I'm really sad, and I'm a little bit in disbelief. I know it was something that was going to happen sooner or later.'

Angel recalled MTV's central role in connecting artists and the audience: 'We need to keep supporting artists, and we all need to dance again and listen to music. Today we do it online, each in our own small world, but MTV was the place where everything came together. That’s why it breaks my heart.'

MTV is saying goodbye to its television spaces by the end of the year, marking the close of a chapter in TV pop culture.
